Rockfall barrier inspection and maintenance — the component checklist

A rockfall barrier that has done its job looks almost the same as one that has not. The brake elements have opened, the ropes have stretched, the net has deformed — that is the design working. It does not mean the next block will be met with the same capacity.

Why inspect

When a flexible barrier stops a block, the brake elements open, the support ropes elongate and the net changes shape. The certified class — MEL and SEL under EAD 340059 — applies to the system in its new condition; an opened brake element or a net full of material no longer carries that class. The declared SEL assumes two impacts without repair; a third is not covered.

Installation error is the second reason. A missing or loose rope clip, a clip fitted the wrong way round, a nut without its torque, a base plate not seated on the anchor head: none of this is visible from the road. The acceptance inspection checks each item.

When

  • Acceptance at the end of installation; the result is recorded as the line's baseline together with the pull-out test records — see Anchor and rock bolt pull-out testing on site.
  • Periodic inspection at the interval fixed for the line — 12 months by default, more often below active source areas; in Oman, before and after the khareef season in Dhofar and after cyclone rainfall on the Batinah coast.
  • Post-event inspection after an impact, a flood, an earthquake or a sensor alarm from the monitoring system.

What maintenance means

Emptying the net, replacing opened brake elements and damaged panels, re-tensioning ropes, repairing coating damage, clearing the uphill side and the drainage. Spare parts are matched to the manufacturer of the installed system; we work on barriers of different manufacturers. Each visit ends with a photographed report and the residual capacity of the line stated in writing.

A barrier without an inspection record is a barrier of unknown class. Ask for the acceptance report and the last inspection before you rely on a line.

Questions on this topic

How often should a rockfall barrier be inspected?

Every 12 months by default, more often below active source zones, and after every impact, flood, earthquake or monitoring alarm.

Can an opened brake element be left in place?

No. An opened brake element has used its energy-absorbing travel; it is replaced before the line is counted as being in service at its certified class.
